Senior Accountant

Nch’kaỷ Development Corporation (NDC) was established in 2018 as the economic development arm of the Squamish Nation – Skwxwú7mesh Úxwumixw. Nch’kaỷ’s mandate is to develop, manage and own the active businesses of the Nation and was created to allow for the separation of business and politics within the Squamish Nation. Our mission is to generate wealth and create prosperity from economic opportunities for current and future generations of the Squamish Nation. This role is offered to members first and the broader community if an appropriate application is unavailable. This position will mainly work out of Nch’kaỷ Head Office.

 

Position Status

This is a Temporary Full-time position (3 months contract). Possibility of Permanent Full-time status in the future.

 

Scope of the Position

Working closely with the Director of Finance, to perform and coordinate accounting duties within the company. The senior accountant’s responsibilities include preparing financial reports, performing account reconciliations, maintaining the general ledger, preparing tax returns, assisting with audit preparations, and performing other accounting duties as assigned.

 

Duties, Responsibilities, Authority and Accountabilities

Reporting:

  • Prepare reconciliation of all significant balance sheet accounts as part of the corporate month-end procedures and recommend journal entries where appropriate
  • Prepare monthly reports as required, including GST, WCB and government remittances
  • Preparing financial analyses and reports.
  • Prepare year-end preparations, T4s, T5s, and ROEs.
  • Preparing revenue projections and forecasting expenditure.

 

Accounts Payable and Receivables:

  • Coordinating accounting functions and programs.
  • Oversee and lead the bookkeeping process of accounts receivables
  • Verify and match supplier invoices with authorized purchase orders
  • Perform data entry, ensuring the accuracy of the information
  • Prompt processing of authorized supplier invoices (both in-house and project related ones)
  • Reconcile creditors at the end of the month
  • Effectively communicate regarding all account queries
  • Assisting with preparing and monitoring budgets.
  • Maintaining and reconciling balance sheet and general ledger accounts.
  • Assisting with annual audit preparations.
  • Investigating and resolving audit findings, account discrepancies, and issues of non-compliance.

 

  Accounts Receivable:

  • Prepare invoices to customers on a timely basis
  • Receipt payments to match deposits within the accounting system
  • Follow up on outstanding accounts with customers
  • Reconcile customer accounts at the end of the month
  • Effectively communicate regarding all account queries

 

  Payroll:

  • Oversee payroll processing
  • Responsible for communicating with benefits provider and providing information to employees

 

 Effective processing of payments/cash flow requirements:

  • Prepare and process weekly payments and notify suppliers of impending payments
  • Provide weekly/monthly cash flow requirements including deposits

 

Other

  • Perform other duties as required.

 

Reporting Responsibilities and Authorities from Supervisor

  • Reports to Director of Finance

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Experience

  • Completion of diploma in accounting and/or business would be considered an asset, in addition to working towards an accounting designation
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience of full cycle accounting
  • Minimum 3 years mentoring junior accounting staff
  • Proven experience as a financial controller, accounting supervisor, chief or senior accountant
  • Accuracy and attention to detail
  • Experience with general ledger functions and the month-end/year-end close process
  • Self-motivated and results-focused
  • Clear understanding of processes and systems relating to accounts payable
  • Ability to manage sensitive and confidential information
  • Good organizational and time-management skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong collaborator with solid communication skills.
  • Elevated levels of integrity and ability to manage confidential information.
  • Ability to work independently within established guidelines and procedures and as a member of a team.
  • Willingness to be flexible and adaptable to changing priorities.
  • Strong multi-tasking and organization skills.
  • Ability to set and manage priorities to meet deadlines.
  • Strong people skills and the ability to interact with colleagues and senior management to maintain quality.
  • Proficient in MS Office software (Excel, Word, and Outlook).
  • Experience working with First Nations an asset.

  • Willing to work additional hours as required.
