Company Overview:

Nch’ḵay̓, established in 2018, functions as the economic development arm of the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish Nation). The Real Estate Development Department aims to create vibrant places and communities that embody Squamish values. The Manager of Community Development will contribute to fostering long-term economic prosperity for the Nation.

About the Squamish Nation:

Sḵwx̱wú7mesh are descendants of the original Sḵwx̱wú7mesh-speaking villages located throughout the watersheds of the Squamish River, Mamquam River, Howe Sound, English Bay, False Creek, and Burrard Inlet. With over 4,100 members, the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw is one of the largest First Nations in British Columbia, experiencing growth, ambition, and opportunity.

Scope of the Position

The Manager plays a vital role in supporting the goals of Nch’kaý and the Nation, with a strong emphasis on upholding Sḵwx̱wú7mesh values in community and economic development projects. This position manages activities between Nch’kaý and the Nation, contributes to enhancing delivery capacity, and helps ensure that the progress of development is visible. This aligns with the Nation’s vision, governance, and operations.

The Manager, reporting to the Director of Community Development, works closely with the community and Nch’kaý staff to help the team achieve project goals, scope, and timelines. The Manager is organized, adaptable, and an excellent communicator who proactively seeks opportunities to enhance stakeholder value in support of Nch’kaý and the Nation’s objectives.

 

Duties, Responsibilities, Authority, and Accountabilities 

 

Oversight of Implementation Support

  • Support the maintenance of the nation’s service obligation plans, ensure visibility in design and construction, assist in identifying service needs, and help prepare implementation reports.

 

Coordination of Staff & Stakeholders

  • Manage working relationships with the Nations, internal Nch’kaý staff, and external partners to contribute to decision-making processes, support the delivery of guidelines, coordinate work, and resolve issues.

 

Submissions & Record Management

  • Provide support and maintain the processes for resource and records management, serving as a knowledge and support point for relevant staff

 

Strategic Planning Support 

  • Contribute to strategic project planning, visioning, and community engagement initiatives to drive economic development and support the creation of comprehensive plans aligning with Nation goals.

 

Pre-development Support: 

  • Assist in the planning stages for economic development, supporting feasibility and impact studies for viable, beneficial projects.

 

Project Delivery Coordination 

  • Collaborate with business development teams within Nch’kaý and with external partners to support seamless project execution.

 

Staff Support & Coordination

  • Support and coordinate the work of relevant staff, balancing priorities and contributing to a productive work environment.

 

Vision Alignment Support

  • Assist in ensuring economic development projects reflect the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Nation’s vision, goals, and cultural values, promoting sustainable growth.

 

Guidelines and Governance 

  • Support the development of guidelines for community engagement and economic development, assist with training initiatives, and help manage agreements with external partners. Support relevant committees and boards with oversight and provide written reports.

 

Community Development 

  • Help with engagement to ensure that the Nation’s people understand and support economic development projects, through participation in discussions and community engagement activities.

 

Cultural Integration 

  • Support the oversight of design panels, collaborate with project teams to align projects with the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Nation’s history and cultural standards, and assist in gathering community input.

 

Relationship Management

  • Support the maintenance of a robust and harmonious relationship with the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Nation, assisting in engaging with community members and acting as a point of contact.

 

Other

  • Perform other duties as required.

 

Reporting Responsibilities and Authorities from Supervisor

  • Reports to Director, Community Engagement.

 

Qualifications

  • Proven experience in management and relationship building with a commitment to delivery. 
  • Candidates should be adept at fostering strong connections and maintaining fruitful relationships with diverse partners.
  • A demonstrated history of successful project management and a keen ability to navigate complex organizational dynamics.
  • Experienced working within Indigenous communities, showcasing an understanding and respect for cultural nuances. 
  • Collaborative problem solver known for creating a positive work environment and building trust with elected officials, employees, and community members. 
  • Excel in teamwork and demonstrate remarkable problem-solving skills. A reputation for fostering a positive workplace and building trust with various community members.
  • Committed to learning about the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Nation’s culture and values. A deep commitment to understanding and appreciating the culture, traditions, and values of the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Nation is expected.   • Holds a relevant degree or certification supporting the required skills. The candidate must possess a degree or relevant certification that aligns with the job responsibilities and qualifications. Continuous professional development and a strong educational background are critical to fulfilling the role effectively.

 

Special Requirements

  • Willing to work additional hours as required.
  • Willing to travel. 

 

Working Conditions

  • Office work (prolong sitting, lifting boxes X lbs.).

 

Expected Salary Range 

$90,000 – $130,000  


Our typical hiring range will be +/- 5% of the midpoint shown above.
