The Nation and Matthews West have worked together on development projects in Squamish territory since 2013. The renewed agreement reflects Squamish Nation priorities and creates a clearer path forward for the partnership while supporting long-term economic benefits for Squamish People.

Key Highlights of the Renewed Agreement: 

1. Nch’ḵay̓ now manages the Nation’s ownership interest

Nch’ḵay̓ now manages Squamish Nation’s one-third ownership interest in the Cheekeye and Oceanfront Squamish projects on behalf of the Nation. This strengthens Nch’ḵay̓’s role in managing the Nation’s economic interests, helps protect their long-term value, and reduces risk for the Nation.

2. More Squamish lands are back under Nation stewardship

The partnership has refined its focus to the Cheekeye and Oceanfront Squamish projects. As part of this evolution, Matthews West released its options on approximately 1,530 acres of other Squamish Nation fee simple lands, returning them to the Nation’s full stewardship and future decision-making.

3. More opportunities for Squamish People and Indigenous businesses

The updated agreement formalizes the partnership’s longstanding commitment to creating opportunities for Squamish and Indigenous workers, businesses, and contractors through an Indigenous Participation Plan. The plan will be managed by Nch’ú7mut Contracting to help coordinate and deliver these opportunities throughout the projects.

The renewal is built around Squamish Nation priorities and Nch’ḵay̓’s purpose. The updated agreement reflects Squamish Nation’s priorities and strengthens Nch’ḵay̓’s ability to deliver on its mandate to develop and manage the Nation’s business interests, generating long-term wealth and prosperity for the Nation.
