When David Barreau (Williams) started his general contracting company in 2020, his vision was to build a workplace that people could call home.
He wanted to create a positive experience for those working in construction – safe, healthy, sober, and caring.
“I just saw an opportunity there where I could shift the narrative a little bit,” said the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh entrepreneur. “I know when I was young, trying to find a company to work for in a good positive environment was very difficult, especially in the construction world.”
Five years later, Telhkem Contracting has become an established business in the Squamish Valley, with services including renovations; window, deck, and fence installation; concrete placing and finishing; flooring, drywall and mud work; demolition; site debris removal; cabinet installation; and more.
The team has also expanded recently – partnering with a commercial drywalling company and a construction management company to take on multi-family homes, high rises, and apartment buildings.
David said the most rewarding part of the work is “being able to help guys who are willing to work and learn.”
Asked if he has any advice for other aspiring Indigenous business owners, he replied:
“Just take the plunge because there’s a lot of big opportunities out there, especially as a Squamish Nation Member or Indigenous Person.”
