For Frances Nahanee, business is a deeply family affair.
She credits her parents, Freda Nahanee Menalthelwet and the late James Nahanee Sxaaltwx-t, for pushing her into the world of entrepreneurialism — encouraging her to purchase a gift shop in Sechelt in 1995 with help from the shíshálh Nation.

After decades of running Tsain-Ko Native Gifts, Frances’ son Theodore will soon take over, keeping the business in the family and continuing a proud legacy of celebrating all of the living Indigenous cultures of the Pacific Northwest.
“I have loved my career as a business owner because of the changes that have occurred over the last 40 years in awareness of Native culture and art,” said Frances.
“It keeps us learning and adjusting to the changing markets and times and I love the challenge of keeping up with the trends.”
Tsain-Ko Native Gifts features a diverse collection carefully curated First Nations products, including art from renowned and emerging Coast Salish artists, jewellery, clothing, books, wellness products, and more.
Asked for her advice to other aspiring Indigenous entrepreneurs, Frances said:
“Take business management courses — especially marketing — and write a business and marketing plan so you know whether your businesses idea is a good one. Know what you’re getting into and be prepared to devote your time to keeping up with the trends and factors that will impact your business success.”
